KENKO HOUSE

Occupant health guided the design for this new construction home. Our client has acute mold, chemical, dust and EMF sensitivities, rendering most environments unlivable. Rigorous, high-performance construction detailing and systems promote a clean and healthy living experience. Expansive windows and gracious roof overhangs work in tandem to connect the home to the outdoors while protecting it from the elements. A minimal, bespoke material palette is a calm backdrop for the client's art collection. The durable exterior cladding includes a standing seam metal roof, aluminum windows, shou sugi ban siding and cedar soffits. Maple flooring and birch cabinetry highlight the interiors. Non toxic finishes and an energy recovery ventilation system were used for healthy indoor air. Tadelakt plaster shower and bath walls along with extra-large format tile minimize mold growth in moisture-prone areas. The Japanese-inspired landscape is a tranquil backdrop for this simple, aging-in-place residence.
