We design modern, crafted spaces inspired by lifestyle and connected to nature. Architecture specific to context and in harmony with people, place and planet.

Modern.

Modern means something different to everyone. For us, it is more of an approach to building than an aesthetic ideal. Our work prioritizes the essential elements of a project and is void of superficial ornamentation. Each project is a balanced composition of clean, consistent details. The result is a minimalist, responsible design that is straightforward to build and cost effective. Less is More

Responsible.

Building is a significant commitment of time, money, effort and resources. We accept that responsibility with passion and care. This means creating beautiful, functional spaces meant to last. This means understanding and working rigorously within the financial structure of a project. This means creating buildings that minimize their impact on the environment. This means listening to our clients, collaborators and community to create places that have value OUTSIDE our studio. Delightfully Grounded

Sustainable.

We approach building as a partnership with the land and seek solutions specific to their place. Our work employs energy efficient systems, passive solar design and utilizes natural materials. Our base level homes are environmentally responsible, without compromise. And we welcome even more aggressive sustainability goals such as passive house design, net zero/positive or living building challenge. Building for the Future

Specific.

We listen to you, your goals, your property and all the forces impacting the place we’re designing for you. The result is something uniquely yours and one of a kind. You’ll feel how it purposefully works, in your place and with your lifestyle. It couldn’t exist anywhere else for anyone else. Like a Glove

Indoor / Outdoor.

A consistent theme in our work is a strong connection between building and landscape. Homes should be rooted in context and respond to setting. Healthy homes connect people to the outdoors, with views, natural light and ventilation. By blurring the distinction between inside and OUTSIDE, we encourage people’s inherent desire to connect with nature. Connect with Nature

Craft.

The digital age has seen a disappearance of craft. There are fewer people making things and, seemingly, less demand for custom solutions. Our work celebrates the dying art of making custom moments with specificity. Our process promotes early and consistent design collaborations with the builders, fabricators and suppliers who bring our work to life. Keep Craft Alive

Fun.

Your project, and the process of creating it, can and should be enjoyable. It’s a lot of fun working together to dream, design and create a home specifically for you. Touching materials, virtually inhabiting your space before it’s built, having an impulse and then seeing it come to life are standard to our process and will put a smile on your face. Creating something together forges a bond of shared pride. The ongoing relationships we have with our clients is easily the most rewarding part of what we do. Enjoy the Moment

THE OUTSIDE TEAM

Jeremy%252BOffice.jpg

JEREMY SPURGIN

PRINCIPAL ARCHITECT

Growing up in a family of contractors gave Jeremy an early foundation for his love of home building. Outside Architecture grew out of his combined passions for design, construction, custom homes and all things outdoors. A Wisconsin native, Jeremy can typically be found, with partner Bethany, renovating their century-old home or getting Outside with their dog Ranger on a kayak or hiking trail.

CONNOR STEPHENS

DESIGNER / PROJECT LEAD

A native of Portland, Connor found his admiration for architecture at an early age through the medium of Legos. Growing up in Oregon fueled a love for the outdoors. Weekends are often occupied with camping trips, hiking or riding his road bike. Connor has played music his whole life, as a drummer he is constantly tapping on something.

KRISTI WEYRENS

OPERATIONS MAGICIAN

Kristi has significant creative agency experience, both from the design and operations side of those businesses. That dual approach is critical in helping designers to use the left side of their brain. She quietly keeps this ship sailing smoothly behind the scenes. You might bump into her at a dog park with the adorable furball Orly or on her Minnesota-family heirloom boat.

RANGER

OFFICE MUTT / GOOD BOY

More formally known as Gene Parmesan, Ranger is the studio’s biggest advocate for getting Outside. When he’s not hiking, kayaking or running with his pack, he can be found napping on the studio floor, eyeing the treat bin or gently requesting the password from all studio visitors. Pro tip… It’s “Treat”
