What does OUTSIDE Architecture mean to us
What does OUTSIDE mean…
We view OUTSIDE Architecture as an ethos when approaching design, development and construction.
OUTSIDE reminds us while much of what we create is inside spaces, the best buildings celebrate and strengthen our connection to nature by blurring the line between inside and OUTSIDE.
OUTSIDE reminds us to pay close attention to interstitial spaces, where landscape and structure meet. Arguably the most important and occupied zone of a building- especially a home. Like the fertile edge of a stream where land and water meet, this is where life happens. Operable glass doors. Deep occupiable walls. Covered outdoor space. Window Seats. Courtyards. Trellis. Integrated planters. Spaces that blur the boundaries. Elements that bring the OUTSIDE in.
OUTSIDE reminds that not all solutions are discovered in the design studio. We are inspired when we get OUTSIDE (the architecture studio) and walk a project site; visit a fabricator’s studio; tour related projects; browse material yards or fixture showrooms; go the library or bookshop; visit the art museum; attend a workshop, seminar or lecture; participate in the community; hike in the mountains; relax on the beach; travel the world.
OUTSIDE reminds us that some of the most interesting and thoughtful work is being created OUTSIDE the traditional architectural process and to view our work though those OUTSIDE lenses. -The contractor - The developer -The artist -The DIY homeowner -The craftspeople -The flora and fauna
OUTSIDE reminds us that building is a collaboration with many perspectives OUTSIDE our design studio. We encourage participation early and often so our design process is viewed through these OUTSIDE lenses: The builder and craftspeople. Planners and inspectors. Consulting partners. Our clients. The neighbrohood. The land.
OUTSIDE reminds us of our immense responsibility to the environment and to our communities that comes along with every building.
